11. Supervisors House

This building is the second oldest one on the property. The Supervisor’s House was built in the late 1890s by Mr. Clyde – the owner of Honey Horn at that time. Mr. Clyde was the first owner of the property to have a full time manager in residence – John Lawrence. John, his wife Flora, and their daughter Margaret came to Hilton Head Island from New Jersey and moved into this house. Over the years, many other additions were put on the house but they fell into disrepair.

Thankfully, when the additions were removed, it was found that the original section of the house was still usable. In 2016 this building opened as the Tom Peeples Discovery Lab. It is used as an educational facility and houses many of our education animals including alligators, snakes, and horseshoe crabs. Some of our public programs are even held in the Discovery Lab.
